Introduction

Nikola Tesla was born during the night of 9–10 July 1856 in Smiljan, in present-day Croatia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He became an electrical engineer, inventor and scientist. This article focuses mainly on his inventions and later life rather than providing a complete academic biography.

Early Life

Tesla grew up in the family of Serbian Orthodox priest Milutin Tesla and his mother Đuka Tesla. From childhood he showed exceptional imagination and technical ability. His older brother Dane was also regarded as highly gifted, but died after an accident involving a horse. The loss had a deep effect on the family and on Nikola.

As a child, Tesla created mechanical toys and small improvements to everyday devices. He developed an unusually strong visual imagination and later claimed that he could design and test machines mentally before building them.

Alternating Current and Inventions

Tesla's best-known achievements include the polyphase alternating-current system, induction motor, high-frequency transformers, radio-control demonstrations, wireless-lighting experiments and numerous improvements in electrical engineering. His work helped establish AC generation and distribution as the practical basis of modern power systems.

Colorado Springs Laboratory

In 1899 Tesla established a laboratory in Colorado Springs, where he built a very large experimental oscillator and investigated high-frequency, high-voltage phenomena, natural electrical resonance and wireless transmission. The facility produced spectacular artificial lightning and allowed him to study resonant circuits at unprecedented scale.

Wardenclyffe

Tesla later built the Wardenclyffe laboratory and tower on Long Island. His ambition was a worldwide wireless communication system and, ultimately, wireless transmission of electrical energy. Financial support ended before the project was completed, and the tower was eventually dismantled.

Legacy

Tesla died in New York in 1943. During his lifetime he experienced both fame and financial hardship. Today he is recognised as one of the most influential electrical inventors, although popular accounts sometimes mix documented achievements with exaggerated claims. His genuine work on AC machinery, resonance, high-frequency engineering and remote control remains extraordinary.
